The Next "Apollo Project"

We are making imagine it!² The Power of Imagination to inspire the next generation to take on the grand challenges we face and make the world a better place. What we've uncovered along the way--through countless interviews, exhaustive research and careful study--is that there is a vaccum of leadership. The next generation has not had leadership galvanize their "man-to-the-moon" moment, a call to action, but their time has come.

Here's what Joe Klien said writing in TIME, about Barak Obama and the potential for the next "man-to-the-moon" moment: He (Obama) has a clearer handle on the big picture, on how various policy components fit together, and a strong sense of what his top priority would be. He wants to launch an "Apollo project" to build a new alternative-energy economy. His rationale for doing so includes some hard truths about the current economic mess: "The engine of economic growth for the past 20 years is not going to be there for the next 20. That was consumer spending...A new economic turbocharger is going to have to be found, and "there is no better potential driver that pervades all aspects of our economy than a new energy economy ... That's going to be my No. 1 priority when I get into office."

Regardless of who wins the Presidential election, the time has come for the next President to call the next generation to action by guiding them to their "man-to-the-moon" moment--this generation's Apollo Project. Obama says his "man-to-the-moon" moment will be an "energy economy." I don't believe we know what McCain's call to action would be. The point is, there are many challenges--energy being one of them--that offer the next generation the opportunity to engage their curiosity, think creatively to change the world in ways we can only imagine.
